ACAS Codes of Practice

ACAS (Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service) is a Government funded not for profit organisation which offers advice and guidance on a whole range of employment related matters for employers and employees.

ACAS has for a number of years published a number of guidance booklets. It has also published a code of practice on disciplinary and grievance procedures. However, the latest guide is now expected to have even more significance because it is intended that as from 1 April 2009, ACAS will become the statutory authority for how to deal with disciplinary and grievance issues in the workplace.
It will replace the current and much maligned statutory procedures which were introduced by the Employment Act 2002. However, it is couched in general terms and whereas a knowledge of the code of practice will be vital, that will rarely be enough to enable an employer to fulfil and deal comprehensively with each scenario that arises.
