Employment Tribunals – The Latest Statistics following removal of issue and other fees

Employment Tribunal Claims up 90%

Quarterly statistics for the period October to December 2017 showed the number of single claims rose from 4,200 in 2016 to a staggering 8,173. The number of claims were also up 16% on the previous quarter.

Multiple claims were also up by a significant margin however this increase was in part due to a mass of 30,000 claims brought against an airline.

With such an increase in activity the pressure will be on the system to cope with the demand and inevitable delays are being reported with a growing backlog of claims.  It is clear greater investment in resources to support employment tribunals will be required.

The Supreme Court ruling led to the Government announcing a “full refund” scheme. As at the end of 2017 a total number of 3,337 refunds have been made totalling £2.7m.
